Lea Keep, Meadow in the North East Yorkshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

East Yorkshire based visual communicator, and sculptor. My work focuses on colour, the natural world, and how plants connect with us. I work in whatever materials I can afford/acquire including digital drawing often incorporating handwritten lettering. My current focus for my practice is communicating the importance of our relationship with the natural environment.

In my early 20s, I visited the North Yorkshire Coast and fell in love with the plants, the weather and the open spaces. After graduating from university, I had a few years away from the arts due to health struggles and battling the need to earn a living. I am now lucky enough to be living and working as an artist on the on the east coast. I have traded for the last 5 years under the name Meadow in the North making mushroom themed jewellery and small artworks. This work allowed me to have some creative expression whilst working full time not in the arts.

Last year I started working on my artistic practice full time. I am in my first year of being able to take on commissions and apply for funding as well as having the time to explore and develop my practice. So far, I have had the opportunity to create artwork for vegetable beds at Woodend Gallery as well as a planting plan to make use of the beds as a backdrop for garden pop up music and art events. I am lucky to share the local creative scene with so many talented musicians and have created some merchandise, posters and social media animation loops to compliment songs. I also assist in creating decoration for woodland banquet events in the wild woodland landscapes of East Yorkshire.

My focus this year is developing my approach to drawing and better understanding my creative voice. I am focusing on using my art to communicate the importance of our role within the natural world.
