Meg Bristol London, United Kingdom
My name is Meg Bristol. I am a London and Leeds based painter, working in acrylic depictions of the ordinary. My work is designed to appeal to those who enjoy the beauty of a quiet moment. I use my work to slow down time, taking a closer look at the familiar buildings we pass idly on the way to work, or relaxing in the memory of a cleansing bath.
My name is Meg Bristol. I am a London and Leeds based painter, working in acrylic depictions of the ordinary. Today, our lives are riddled with petty squabbles and prejudice. It has become all too easy to feel lonely. We run from appointment to appointment, our minds dancing between stress and boredom. However, there are these moments of calm: waking up to the sound of rain, smelling a clean towel after a long shower, or getting under the covers on a cold day. These moments are familiar to us all. I enjoy the idea of my work welcoming viewers by sharing in a quiet moment. I'm inspired by creating an intimacy between my work and those observing it. As an artist, I am uninterested in perfection. I use acrylic paint. Its quick drying nature forces me not to overthink any rough marks or dribbles of paint. The accidental imperfections are reborn, becoming characterful details in the piece. My approach to painting is reflected in my objectives, portraying the accident of a beautiful moment. In my most recent public exhibition at Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds, I displayed an arrangement of paintings depicting myself washing my hair. My intention was to recreate that all-encompassing feeling of cleanliness we so often take for granted. Since then, I have been painting from photos of buildings I've seen on everyday walks, utilising a muted colour palette to convey the familiarity of a "miserable" English day. Moving forward, I intend to continue exploring the "calm", experimenting with mark making and palette choice to engage as much as possible with the comfort of domestic routine.
