I am a practising photographic artist and an academic with over forty years experience. I successfully completed a Masters degree with a Distinction, focussing on photography's relationship with memory and its influence on the development of one’s identity. In my practice I photograph a diverse range of subjects – people, places, and objects of interest, sometimes found, sometimes created.
A key aspect of my artistic practice is concerned with the fundamental raw material of photography i.e. the awareness, quality and control of light, both in its natural form and in a ‘studio’/ artificial environment. Whether I’m working in the natural world or man-made environments, striving to not just capture but create a moment, I’m often using juxtaposition of compositional elements and unusual angles or abstraction, resulting in a slightly surreal representation. My work can be in full colour or monochrome, this is not necessarily an aesthetic decision but more of an expression of my emotional response to the subject matter itself.
