Paul Butterworth Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Paul Butterworth is an abstract painter working from his home studio in Cambridge. He has painted since childhood and is due to graduate with a BA (Hons) Painting in 2023. When not painting he is acting. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama from 1974 to 1977 and his acting career spans over 40 years with numerous TV and film credits from the 'Full Monty' to 'Allelujah'.

Paul Butterworth uses Golden Acrylic on canvas because of their colour saturation and quick drying time. He uses secondary colours straight from the tube or mixes them. This gives him a bright saturated palette divorced from nature. Colours then become a language of their own separated from their functional use of guiding us round the visual world. He uses colour inside shapes to fill the canvas and compose visually harmonious surfaces that are emotionally and intellectually stimulating without conscious meanings. His aim is to connect and entertain. His work provokes personal responses in the viewer that range from the decorative, through the symbolic and figurative, to the meaningful. Paul has no authorial intent and is happy for the viewer to connect to his work with joy, contemplation, or a wry smile.
