    Sarah McAlister graduated with MA Textiles from The University for the Creative Arts in 2024 and focuses her practice on re-using found materials. Her work is made in response to places and events she has experienced. Her ethos as a textile artist is to recycle, re-use and re-purpose existing resources meaning that her pieces are made entirely from found objects and fabrics.

    I’ve been trying to get to the root of why I paint what I paint, after much ruminating I think I’ve realised the different avenues my mind travels down. I’ve become more interested recently in a still life aspect to my work, looking at old toys and discarded objects and it’s the stories about the past, that I can almost see- just out of reach and stories are the main diet of my imagination.

    I work with dried flora (flowers, grasses, leaves, twigs, berries and more) weaving, stitching and sticking on tulle fabric within wooden frames to create three-dimensional pieces. I take my inspiration (and my materials) from the natural world around me - what I see from my window, in my garden, on dog walks and beyond.     I am a freelance photographer with a wide range of photographic interests, so I don't specialise in any particular genre.     I am a printmaker based in Edinburgh Scotland. I travel around the country in my campervan painting plein aire watercolour sketches of the landscape. Back in Edinburgh I convert these sketches into collagraphs and print them either at Edinburgh Printmakers or at home. I am trying to cover the whole of Scotland. I also engage in protest art around refugee, BAME issues and others.
