Redacted Greater Manchester, United Kingdom
Redacted is a multidisciplinary artist born in Rochdale, based in Manchester. Blending theory with pop culture references, Redacted creates bold, visually striking work that invites audiences in, exploring "the unseen, unspoken and unexpected stories that lie beneath and between written words”. A rejection of elitism and perfectionism ,whilst making space for wider engagement with arts and ideas.

My artist name is “Redacted” , it is taken from the term used to describe documents released and declassified by the governmental bodies such as the CIA. Redaction obscures sensitive details like intelligence sources, military plans, private citizen information, allowing for the public release of documents while maintaining confidentiality. I feel over socialisation is a continuation of surveillance culture. Redacted communicates the feeling of an expectation and entitlement to people’s privacy, under the guise of this being motivated by a moral principle. I feel this is in fact a form of hostility , social invasion and frankly , is overbearing. An invasion of the artist’s life often occurs.
I understand how ominous and cold the name “Redacted” can come off , so feel free to refer to me as “Bunny X”.
I tend to use motifs and imagery from pop culture in hopes I can cause a sense of familiarity within audiences, I hopes this helps them engage further with my work. I feel a picture can speak a thousands words, people are far more inclined to stare at a picture, rather than read a thousand words. I try to make my work emulate a thousand words.
My work is based on real life events, which I attempt to connect back to present era , the culture which facilitates certain events to take place. This decision has led to my work showcasing a link between abstract concepts and real life.
My work is a kaleidoscopic portal to the past, present and future of marginalised narratives. Capturing the beauty that can be found within the pain and pleasure across the black diaspora and is heavily inspired by Afro surrealism. A reflection of my life. Storytelling, socio-political commentary, surrealism, vulnerability, archival materials, spirituality, cultural criticism, afro-pessimism alongside a dash of realism, memes and internet culture are integral components of my artistic practice.
My practice spans across various mediums which include: sculpture, modelling, photo editing , textiles, painting , collage , digital art, creative writing , dance and performance art. My practice is intertwined and interlinked , one cannot exist without the other.
