Ingrained Culture, Robert Lawrence. Aberdeenshire, United Kingdom
I am a wood carver & artificer. I specialise in contemporary life size and life like figurative sculpture that reflects today's values and society. I'm also known for my climate change, plastic litter and conservation art. My work is aimed to induce natural human responses and interactions and I hope to make everything relevant and reflective of what's happening around us.
My name is Robert Lawrence, I have an inherent ability with wood and a passion for responsible ecology. I am a wood carver & artificer working in Aberdeenshire. I have spent several years developing an ethical and ecological alternative for sculpture permanently installed outside in constantly changing weather conditions. I believe the Public conscience and art fashion has moved on from the use of bronze, steel and concrete. Bronze was ideal in the Victorian era of industrialisation and Gothic splendor. Steel and concrete was ideal from during the 50s to 90s of brutal architecture and science fiction. Today however, society is much more aware of the environment and the need to treat our world with respect. I exclusively use British grown sustainable timber and I make everything by hand personally, with the lowest carbon foot print I can.
Figurative sculpture has been used to manipulate human emotions for thousands of years and to ornament every kind of building. I make figurative ornamentation that reflects today’s society and values. Nothing I make is expensive. I’m passionate about environmental responsibility and the potential of Scotland’s woodlands.
All my work is exclusively made from sustainable Scottish/British grown and legally harvested timber. I am fully Licensed by ‘Grown in Britain’ and ‘Scottish working woods’ and every piece I make comes with guarantees of provenance and legality of harvesting.
