Ingrained Culture, Robert Lawrence. Ayrshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

I am a woodcarver, artificer and artisan pictorial sign maker. My sculpture is often for memorials, both for highly personal private remembrance and for Public Spaces. All my work is concerned with sustainability, climate change and environmental responsibility. My work has been exhibited widely in the UK and online. I sculpture in the Public Collection and on permanent display.

My name is Robert Lawrence, I have an inherent ability with wood and a passion for responsible ecology. I am a woodcarver and artificer working in South Ayrshire. I have spent several years developing an ethical and ecological alternative for sculpture permanently installed outside in constantly changing weather conditions. I believe the Public conscience, art and fashion have moved on from the use of bronze, steel and concrete. Bronze was ideal in the Victorian era of industrialisation and Gothic splendour. Steel and concrete were ideal in modernist times of brutal architecture and science fiction. Today however, society is much more aware of the environment and the need to treat our world with respect. I exclusively use 100% legal and sustainable British grown timber and I make everything by hand personally, with the lowest carbon foot print I can.

I work in both traditional and contemporary styles, I have a growing niche in making artisan sculpted house name signs for private clients. I make figurative ornamentation for buildings and gardens that reflect today’s society and values. I often work for community groups making everything from conservation, plastic litter signs to full large scale Public Art installations. Nothing I make is expensive, it's all delivered on time and on budget, no messing.

My practice is fully certified by 'Grown in Britain' and I'm fully Licensed by ‘Scottish working woods’ and certified by the 'South Ayrshire and Galloway' UNESCO Biosphere every piece I make comes with guarantees of provenance and legality of harvesting.
