I am primarily a painter, based in the east of England. I apply the philosophy of collage to the materials of painting. Since graduating from Chelsea College of Arts M A course in 1998 I have worked with an archive of materials generated in the studio ( canvas offcuts and dried films/puddles/fragments of paint) to construct images from imagination and memory.

I began using disruptive processes to trigger and find images rather than impose or illustrate them, and to avoid the stasis of a signature style.

Career landmarks Include a solo show at Outpost Gallery Norwich and the group exhibition "Malerei ohne Malerei" (Painting without Painting) at Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven north Germany.

An ongoing dialogue with artist Blaise Drummond culminated last year (2025) in the joint show "As The Summer turns to Rust" which transferred from Old Jet Suffolk U.K. to Galerie Loevenbruck Paris.

I have recently shown work inspired by the natural history dioramas in Norwich Castle Museum for the group show "in Proximity" for which I was awarded a commendation.

Currently I am working towards a solo show in 2027 at the 15th century Woolmarket house in King's Lynn, former home and studio of artist Gustav Metzger. The paintings will explore ideas triggered by the history of auto destructive art located in the space.

"Robert Sherratt" Solo Show

My first Solo Exhibition a "crafted conceptual" approach to painting. These large works on canvas used cut away engineering diagrams of 20th century vehicles as a visual framework. The components of the pictured cars were replaced with corresponding drip, spill, and splash shapes. All of these apparently "immediate" marks were hand painted...
