  Back to profiles

Born in Nottinghamshire, Stuart Reid completed a Foundation course in Art and Design at Grimsby School of Art. He studied Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art and Birmingham School of Art (Postgraduate Painting). He lives in East London and works in a Space Studio. His paintings have been shown nationally and internationally and are in public, corporate and private collections.

My practice explores the relationship between figuration and abstraction, drawing inspiration from nature. I focus on colour, shape, and space, with the changing light of the landscape playing a significant role in my work. I use drawing and watercolour to capture fleeting moments and the effects of light, employing sketchbooks and photography for documentation. These references inform my studio process, which aims to distil the essence of each experience rather than simply reproduce it. The physicality of painting is integral to my approach. I employ a variety of brushes and techniques, sometimes applying paint with my hand. This process transforms initial marks into works that oscillate between the figurative and the abstract, inviting viewers to engage with the canvas and experience the dynamic relationship between figure and nature. My art aims to evoke an emotional response, encouraging viewers to embark on a sensory journey that transcends the tangible. Through my work, I invite contemplation of the boundaries between reality and imagination, celebrating the subtle beauty of the natural world and the expressive possibilities of paint.

If you are interested in my work, please contact me at stuartreid.art@gmail.com. I am happy to answer any questions and can arrange a studio visit at your convenience. Viewing artworks in person is recommended. My studio is located at Ilford Town Hall, Space Studios, with easy access via public transport from the London Queen Elizabeth line or by road from the A406.
