Sue Lynn North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Sue Lynn, a Yorkshire contemporary artist. has been painting for over 30 years. Sue studied Fine Art and Crafts at Leeds College of Art, BA Hons Art and Design at Bradford College. Sue uses oils primarily, to draw out intangible moments from specific memories. These result in richly textured and colourful paintings.
I am a Leeds born contemporary artist, now living and working close to Harrogate. Since starting painting 30 years ago memory has been my driving force.
My chosen medium is oil paint, for its endless possibilities and qualities. I draw elements of intangibility from a particular memory, to then re-visit a remembered mood or/and fascination. I apply the paint in careful layers, scraping and scoring into the layers, before reapplying more paint. I repeat the process until a sort of recognition, or coming into focus of my chosen reminiscence appears, this results in a richly textured surface, with subtle colouring.
My recent work is from the perspective of the present, my focus, has been on the enigma of these snap shot images from the past. I ask myself, do they change over time or remain constant as in a film still? Im not looking for literal translations, as I realise there is no precise formula for memory’s understanding. The complexities of remembering can only be an individual experience, my own personal memory has always been reliably erratic. Art practice for me is ongoing and experimental, an exploration of reminiscence and the problematics surrounding it.
Drawing is about the physicality of it for me, putting down on paper an image. My starting point is an element or fragment of a remembered moment. I purposefully don’t have a specific idea to begin with, just the pure basics of charcoal on paper. In addition I later use graphite and metallic pencils, sometimes acrylic paint to help recreate the atmosphere of a fragmented, remembered moment. I particularly like the sound of charcoal moving across paper, then scoring into the image, until the paper is at its limit. The result is a unique textural surface. Although the drawings are worked on, and are of similar subject matter as my paintings, they deserve to be viewed as pieces in their own right.
