Sue Lynn North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Sue is a contemporary yorkshire based artist gaining a Diploma in Fine Art, Jacob Kramer, 1993. BA Honours Degree in Art and Design at Bradford College In 1997. Exhibitions since; most notables The Royal Academy Summer Show 2024, Royal Cambrian 2023. Primarily Sue uses oil paint, to draw out intangible moments from specific memories. Layers of impasto being a striking feature of her work.
The paintings are the expression of my long standing interest with reminiscence, in particular the juxtaposition of a child’s sensory based understanding of their surroundings from the perspective of adult informed awareness, from this counterpart the imagery within the paintings emerge. Applying thick impasto layers of oil paint on either stretched cotton canvas or heavy linen I explore the phenomenon of retrospection, memory and reminiscence. I’m not looking for literal translations, as I realise there is no precise formula for memory’s understanding, the complexities of remembering can only be an individual experience, my own short term memory for instance has always been erratic in contrast with my vividly detailed long term recall. Within my recent body of work mannequins appear, as symbols for the internalisation; the idealised perfect figure that surrounds females from a young age, contrasted with the vulnerability of a industrial landscape endangered over many decades. Art practice for me is an exploration into reminiscence and the problematics that surround it, increasingly environmental issues inform the work.
Influences Surrealist Cinema , early Surrealists female artists; the writings of Angela Carter, Bruno Shultz, Margaret Atwood and Ian McEwan
