I am a landscape artist working in oils and mixed media, my work is diverse and colourful drawn from direct experience of landscape. I make calm and meditative paintings that create a peaceful atmosphere drawn from experience. During the recent past we have all been confined and isolated and I have responded to this challenge by directing my attention to making work about my garden
Most of my work is drawn from my home landscape in Derbyshire and sometimes from farther afield and it leads me to respond in different directions. I walk and sketch and take snapshots and audio of details returning often to the same place and spending time in observation before working in the studio. I work intuitively building up my work in layers reflecting that sense of depth and history. Working in oils gives space for reflection and change. My work is in response to a particular place and how it felt to be in that space at that time combined with ideas of each place as a palimpsest , that is, each place carries its history and atmosphere in its earth, it’s trees , stones, water . One that is constantly overwritten as time passes.
