My mixed-media landscape and cityscape paintings are made with layers of translucent watercolour, acrylic or oils applied to a ground of textured gesso and sometimes incorporate hand painted collage areas. I paint in a lively, intuitive and experimental way, responding to the mediums I work with, incorporating sanding, scratching and repainting to enhance the texture and light of the surface
My mixed-media paintings are made with layers of translucent watercolour, ink, acrylic or oils applied to a ground of textured gesso, sometimes incorporating hand painted papers in the form of collage. I paint in a lively, intuitive way, responding to the mediums I work with, sometimes sanding, scratching and repainting to enhance the texture and light of the surface.
My work can be divided into 3 themes which sometimes overlap: atmospheric mixed-media landscapes, cityscapes including iconic London landmarks, and still life. I often work in a series, taking time to develop many ideas using a particular theme. I am drawn to solitary enigmatic buildings on a horizon and how they relate to the landscape for example, in the area of salt-marshes around the Thames estuary with its unique light and unusual landscape dotted with ruined industrial buildings. Despite not being conventionally beautiful, I find it fascinating and a constant source of inspiration.
I aim to create a dialogue with the viewer, leaving space for them to project their own narrative onto the artwork.
About me-
Prior to becoming a professional fine artist, I originally studied constructed textile design at the Royal College of Art. This background continues to inform my current practice in terms of experimenting with innovative textures, pattern and colour.
My work has been exhibited at several prestigious group exhibitions including the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour annual exhibition at the Mall galleries, the Royal Watercolour Society Open, and at several regional contemporary galleries.
I also open my live and work studio in a converted Victorian school in South-East London annually as part of the Dulwich Festival Artists' Open House, where the whole studio space is transformed into a large, triple height gallery.
My work is currently in private collections in the UK, USA, Europe and Australia. Collectors include Dulwich Picture Gallery (who purchased one of my paintings of the gallery as a gift for one of their trustees and another to use for promoting a fundraiser,) a poet (for his book cover), a Silicone Valley billionaire, a Hollywood film producer, a magician, a forensic tax investigator and a stand-up comedienne amongst many others.
In addition to my main painting practice, I am a keen urban sketcher , taking part in many group sketchwalks in London and beyond.
