Charlie Russell United Kingdom
As a working-class person and artist, my work is an ongoing investigation into the role and responsibilities of artists to reject gentrification, particularly in London where I have grown up.
Reflecting on experiences growing up in social housing has led Charlie to produce works which seek to uncover narratives and events within the home, specifically amongst the working-class.
Her works have been described as 'both glitchy and organic', using tactility as a way of communicating concerns and experiences. Charlie converts organic shapes and structures into indeterminate forms as proposed living spaces and questions of social mobility.
A combination of classical inspirations with contemporary issues and raw materials creates an immediacy to Charlie's work. An urgency to acknowledge subjects and topics within her works and an invitation into working-class homes, blurring the lines between familiarity and hostility, where domesticity meets claustrophobia.
