  Back to profiles

Christina France works with print, drawing and a combination of the two. Creating embossed drawings and prints, she aims to make works that evoke the experience of light, shadow, intensity of surface and luminosity. She has a painterly approach using numerous layers in order to achieve the translucency she strives.

As an interdisciplinary artist I use a variety of mediums; drawing, printmaking and, more recently three dimensional and relief forms. Working spontaneously I create embossed drawings and prints as a response to light, water, the skies and reflections. My work is non representational, using layered forms and sometimes intensively worked surfaces. Rust, verdigris, silver and gold dust and leaf have made their way into these surfaces creating reflections that change with the light. Folding and pleating also has been used to create shadows and line can be read as shadow, shadow as line. My most recent series of work -The Shipping Forecast- in which tensions arise between shapes, the interplay of hue and tone and the spaces left between, was printed at the Cambridge Print Studio. Some of the eighteen works are still and spare, others restless and noisy, very much like the eponymous forecast itself.
