Wood-Water-Ink Mokuhanga prints by Christina Crews Kent, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Christina is a European visual artist using drawing, non toxic printmaking and a combination of both to create embossed drawings and prints. She lives and works between Kent in the UK and the Maranges Valley in Burgundy where she finds peace in the geometry of the vineyards, the ‘terroir’ and history of the region.

Recently, eschewing the toxicity of oil based etching, she has embarked on a ‘ Mokuhanga journey’ embracing its carbon neutrality, transportability and inherent beauty. She also has links with Sweden where she was invited as AIR at the Algarden workshop in Boras and is a member of the Grafik I Vast Gallery in Gothenberg.

Sometimes playing with shadow and line or softening borders to lose forms into a haze or vapour her work is understated, quiet and personal, offering the viewer a contemplative respite from our fast moving, digital world. She would associate her work with the Japanese concept of shibui (literally “astringent”), which refers to an aesthetic sense of unobtrusive beauty that balances simplicity with complexity.

Note: Her change of technique and decision to make France her main residency, her website is on hold and her work can be viewed on https://www.flickr.com/photos/202006092@N04/albums
