Miss Edge Illustration Glamorgan, United Kingdom
For over 20 years Claire Edge has been working as a printmaker in South Wales, producing collagraph and relief prints. Recently she has focused her practice under the moniker ‘Miss Edge Illustration’, creating reduction lino prints featuring animals, flowers, plants, still life, and interiors.
Primarily I am a Printmaker, having completed a BA Honours in Fine Art, specialising in printmaking. I work from a studio space in South Wales, where I house an antique etching press. My work is centred around lino printing, specifically the reduction technique. I will start a print with a drawing or watercolour sketch, which helps to determine how many colours will be used in that particular print. Then as the design is complete, each colour layer will be cut away from the lino, as each colour is printed separately. That means there is only a limited number of prints that can printed, as there is no longer any lino left. My subject matter includes still life, natural forms, animals and interiors. I am drawn to bold colour, pattern and tones and I like to combine areas of flat shapes with textures and mark making.
I have recently started to experiment with Ceramics using the Sgraffito technique, to create jewellery and wares. This is a very similar process to lino cutting, as it involves carving into leather hard clay. I find it just as satisfying as carving into lino!
