Carol Sowden Environmetal Artist North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
My practice is driven by the need to be in direct contact with organic and elemental physicality. Through the limitations of only using organic materials I embrace work with an alchemic approach of manipulation to further understand materiality and capacity for organic materials to mark make in their purest form.
Using organic resources from the land and elemental processes such as freezing and burning my aim is to appropriate the beauty of ephemerality in order to draw attention to the fragility of the world we inhabit. It was during my Masters at Leeds Arts University in 2017 I began exploring the process of freezing developing small ice sculptures embedded with organic matter. This ephemeral based project continues as developing work alongside other analytical ways of mark making with land based organic mediums. As a process led artist my work develops with every interaction and making and finished outcomes can never be predicted. Often the processes never end but continue indefinitely. For me the key is to recognise the beauty of unintentional moments of elemental phenomena and subsequently harness their significance.
