Em Hoten Derbyshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Emma's contemporary oil paintings are a fusion of atmosphere, experiment and memory. She draws upon memories of a time and an emotion to overlay into the overall sense of place, capturing the connectivity and the beauty of nature and its calming influence. She is constantly thinking about colours, contrast and composition and how to create movement and texture in her work.

After growing up near the Peak District and spending happy childhood weekends there, Emma made Chapel en le Frith her home in 2015. Emma has worked in marketing for over 20 years as well as becoming a fine artist. Ever evaluating and evolving her style, Emma has continued throughout her professional career to study under many international artists.

The style that emerges in Emma’s work bursts with contrasting energy amongst softness as she combines colour and intriguing textures with her imaginative and abstract landscapes. Her figures and wildlife are abstracted and full of energy.

“My contemporary oil paintings are a fusion of atmosphere, experiment and memory. Using the landscape around me, I draw upon memories of a time and an emotion to overlay into the overall sense of place. Through atmospheric effects and whatever tool will enable me to portray my vision in unusual ways, I want to capture the connectivity and the beauty of nature and the calming influence that it can bring to the soul. Simultaneously, I’m thinking about colours, contrast and composition and how to create movement and texture in my work.

I want my work to leave viewers with deep stillness and peace, allowing them to pause a while and breathe.”
