Joanna Penso North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Joanna Penso is a multi-disciplinary artist based between London and York, UK working with sound-led experiments in film, performance, radio programmes and sound installations.
I’m an artist working with sound-led experiments in film, installation and radio programmes. Often my work depicts attempted acts of sonic alchemy; taking samples of abject bodily sounds and using them as material to create ambient harmonic phrases. The idea in this flipping of associations with sound is to question our learnt societal behaviours towards our own bodies and each other’s.
Humans find connection through a variety of codeded language and behaviours- these 'rules'that we call manners can also act as a barrier to each other. This point of rejection is my inquiry; I’m trying to better understand human relationships and challenge those barriers to it using tools of absurdity and body politics.
I have recently undergone a period of development to incorporate performance of live body sounds in my work. Upcoming shows in 2024 are: The Apartment, Bow Arts April 25, 26, 27, & 28th by appointment, Performance at Hackney Baths, London 11 May and a solo show at Garage Gallery, London July 25, 26, 27 & 28th. Recently I have exhibited with Aesthetica in York, at Southwark Park Galleries, London and at Porthmeor Studios Fishermans Cellar in St Ives, Cornwall.
