I’m an abstract landscape artist based in Haworth, West Yorkshire predominantly working with paint & clay, I also enjoy incorporating found materials. My obsession with colour, surface & texture has long been a common thread. I often walk on the moors and relish the freedom felt there. My work reflects a connection to place and time passing. I want a piece to feel that it is born of the land.

The essence of my art originates from being immersed in wild landscapes, especially the gritstone moors close to home, I am also drawn to the edges of the land, the liminal places. A main concern is to communicate the all encompassing atmosphere of a place. The wind, changing light and huge skies all play a part. My subconscious aim however, is to translate how it feels to be in the environments I have an affinity with and consequently the freedom felt there. I am interested in the interpretation of the world through a filter of belonging to a place. Often this is a fleeting moment carrying a sense of transience or impermanence. The atmosphere of a place is personal, another person’s experience will be completely different. My art can feel old, as if it’s had a life. Paintings are made over time, left to rest, then revisited until resolved. I find returning to a painting is like returning to a place, it’s never quite the same experience, a changed perspective, a different mood, a new outlook. I prefer oil paint but also use acrylic. My ceramic pieces look as if they have been found or dug up from the earth. Many layers of time reflected in layers of materials used, slips, oxides, glazes, wire, one off vessels fired to earthenware. I tend to impart something of myself on the surface of my art, like a layering of memory.

Although rooted in the land, my work often has an ethereal quality. I am drawn to the idea of ‘thin places’, a phrase that describes a boundary or thin veil between the earthly realm and spiritual world. With this in mind, I tend to search for quiet, ancient spaces that give a sense of peace. Over the years I’ve honed an authentic and unique visual language which stems from accumulated memories, my experience of the world is therefore infused in the work.
