Jack Weller South Yorkshire, United Kingdom
I’m a Chesterfield-born painter and Sheffield Hallam Fine Art graduate (2018). Formerly based at S1 Artspace (2019–24), I now work from Yorkshire Artspace’s Exchange Place. My work has included a collaboration with Mercedes-Benz Sheffield (JCT600), and I was nominated for the 2019 Keith Hayman Public Art Award for my mural 'Sheffield, the city as an egg'.
My practice is a visceral excavation of the modern psychic landscape, a form of "data-dumping" where the boundaries between digital noise, personal neurosis, and pop-cultural debris completely dissolve. I treat the canvas as a non-linear desktop, stacking layers of frantic mark-making, biting humor, and fragmented text to mirror the experience of cognitive overload and the sensory blitz of the 21st century. By distorting the human form into surreal hybrids and utilizing a visual vernacular of speech bubbles, diagrammatic arrows, and "lo-fi" aesthetics, I subvert traditional narrative in favor of a stream-of-consciousness purge. There is no hierarchy in my work; a fleeting internet meme, a deep-seated anxiety about identity, and a mundane household object all vibrate on the same plane, resulting in a maximalist interrogation of how we process a world that is increasingly loud, disjointed, and "hardcore."
