Stevie Cavana
I am a Scottish artist, 43 years old, and a full-time single father. With the exception of two years at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, my practice is self-taught—developed outside traditional structures through necessity, independence, and persistence.
My work is influenced by artists such as Banksy and The Rebel Bear, particularly in their use of direct visual language to challenge authority and engage audiences beyond the confines of conventional art spaces. I work primarily with stencils and spray paint, not only for their immediacy and impact, but for what they represent: rebellion, urgency, and refusal to ask permission.
For me, these materials are inseparable from meaning. Stencils and spray paint carry the history of protest, subversion, and voices operating outside institutional approval. I believe that honest advancements in the arts are borne out of rebellion—through questioning norms, disrupting comfort, and creating space for alternative perspectives.
My practice sits at the intersection of street culture and contemporary art. I am interested in who controls space, whose voices are amplified, and how art can function as both confrontation and conversation. While rooted in dissent, my work aims to remain accessible, visually striking, and culturally relevant, inviting engagement rather than exclusion.
Ultimately, my work reflects lived experience: resilience, resistance, and the ongoing negotiation between responsibility and defiance. It is art made without permission, but with intention.
