Emma J Quin United Kingdom
Coming from a social science background, Emma’s work investigates theories or concepts that seek to question the individual’s role in society, expressing these ideas through visual exploration and collaboration. Her work moves between a variety of mediums: photography, text, sculpture, video and audio, creating multisensory, fully embodied modes of communication.
I work within a multidisciplinary practice that explores the tension between the individual and the broader socio-political forces that shape our experiences and, consequently, our existences. Coming from a social sciences background, I approach my work through theories or concepts that seek to question and understand our place and role in society, using this as a starting point for visual exploration through materials, objects and installation.
My work oscillates between a variety of mediums: photography, text, sculpture, video and audio. I use these forms to create multi-sensory works that make a fully embodied experience for audience members. My work can be best described as installation, as it responds directly to the space it inhabits and is often comprised of a variety of parts or instruments.
Investigating socio-political, cultural and imperial systems that condition and conform, my work enjoys questioning socialised ideas of understanding, encouraging a playful, albeit more cynical approach to existence. Feminist and socialist ideas are central to my work and general outlook, as are more modern frameworks of care, community and mutual aid.
