Gaynor Leverett-Jaques Wiltshire, United Kingdom
Combining a fascination with the meaning of colours-personal, traditional and spiritual-and a heartfelt appreciation of the spaces of Wiltshire has created a practice which conveys the joy of living in a place which makes the soul sing. Layers upon speak to the depth of belonging and those who have embraced the places over time.
It all begins with colour. The mood, the palette and my reactions to it. Then comes the space, the sense of a freedom and the emotional connection to place.
Oftentimes (if working in acrylic) the layers are fast and exciting, and sanded back to give connection to past and the layers we walk upon, metaphorically, emotionally and physically. A peek into the depths.
When I’m working with oils, the layers may be many but space always remains to gain a glimpse of what lies beneath.
Intrinsic to all my work is a feeling of empowerment. Strong colours, strong women an ode to our ancestral roots and hope for the future. My work is always approached with an open heart and a deep sense of purpose, honouring the past yet embracing the new world.
