Helen Chadfield Dumfriesshire, United Kingdom
I started out in art creating pencil pet portraits for friends and family. When these proved popular, I branched out and began experimenting with a variety of media, and a variety of subjects. I am always learning, and thoroughly enjoying the process. I decided to take the plunge and set up a website for my art earlier in 2025.
I work in mixed media: acrylic paint, pastels, pencils - whatever seems to suit my subject matter best. My artwork varies from traditional landscapes to more illustrative cartoon-like work designed to raise a smile. I love to experiment, and have to reconcile my general tendency towards a lot of detail, with my enjoyment of broad sweeps of colour and a looser approach. The sky fascinates me, and several of my paintings have attempted to capture both the endless variations in cloud and sky colour and texture, with detailed birds, wildlife or flowers and grasses in the foreground. My more detailed works are usually to represent an accurate portrait of an animal or a scene, while in some of my paintings I simply see where my imagination takes me. There is almost always a recognisable element of some kind, rather than the work being completely abstract. I am very interested in trying out new techniques and different media to create something special.
