I am an artist living and working in Glasgow. I create work and exhibit under the pseudonym Fantod. My work is often autobiographical, exploring themes of loss, anxiety and gender identity. In 2021 I began an ongoing photography project titled ‘AM I ME YET?’, this documents my transition through intimate self-portraits.

My practice is autobiographical, exploring themes of loss, anxiety and gender identity. The mediums I use vary greatly, being informed by the needs of the work as it develops.

Several years ago I was creating work with dolls, using them as devices to explore my own experiences. There was one that I named ‘Fantod’ in reference to Edward Gorey’s ‘The Fantod Pack’. It’s a noun that means ‘a state or attack of uneasiness or unreasonableness’. I used this doll to discuss my struggles with depression and anxiety at the time. Eventually the word became more than the name I gave the doll, it became an all-encompassing description of my practice and I ended up taking it on as a pseudonym.

I now create and exhibit my work under the name ‘Fantod’, which gives me the freedom to push beyond the boundaries of my anxiety and create the work that I need to create rather than limit my practice to what is comfortable and unassuming. It gives me the confidence to open myself up and be vulnerable to the world through my art.

Currently the main focus of my practice is my transition. In 2021 I began an ongoing photography series titled ‘AM I ME YET?’, this documents my transition and works to normalise trans bodies through intimate self-portraits. I’m planning to continue developing this project for as long as I’m transitioning, which is of course a lifelong journey, so this is the start of a lifelong project that will continue alongside the rest of my practice.
