  Back to profiles

Allison James is a textile artist based in West Yorkshire who enjoys playing with colour, shape and texture in the making of her art quilts.

I am a textile artist and art quilter based in West Yorkshire. I enjoy playing with colour , shape and texture in my designs which draw their inspiration from both the natural and built environment. I do not make bed quilts, but, instead, use quilting as an art form for wall mounted pieces - either framed or as unframed wall hangings.

My work has a strong, modern graphic design element and is usually improvisationally or scrap pieced. I often also use collaged applique on the surface of the fabric in order to enhance the design by creating additional visual textures. The wall hangings are usually finished with a combination of both machine quilting and hand embroidery.

I am a member of SAQA ( Studio Art Quilts Association) and have recently joined an international group of SAQA members - 20perspectives - which aims to promote art quilts, and textile art more generally, through mounting exhibitions internationally.
