Jane Fantom Derbyshire, United Kingdom
Creative expression has always been intrinsic to my life having worked with pencil, pen and ink, lino cut, oil pastel, watercolour and acrylics. After retiring in 2017 I followed my passion for mid century design restoring and selling sewing boxes internationally. I then returned to mixed media work in 2021 focusing on alcohol inks on birch ply to enhance the beauty of the wood grain initially.
My mixed media practice focuses on creating contemplative, abstract landscapes using found photographs, and sustainable materials on birch ply which allows my work to be grounded in nature. I explore the emotional parallels between natural cycles and human experience. Soft light, horizon-based compositions, and muted tonalities invite viewers into a space of quiet reflection and connection to the landscape. Through recontextualised imagery, my work examines how moments of stillness and drama can be captured across the seasons. I am inspired by exploration of the High Peak moorland and beyond which provides opportunities for study of the changing light and tonality. Whilst the process of preparation is traditional I work intuitively from memories and dreams allowing the materials at hand to guide the narrative and forms as they emerge rather than relying on formal reference materials.
