I'm a new graduate of Fine Art working in pen and ink and I love to capture the little details of the world around me in Yorkshire. I've come to art after a career in archaeology, where observing and drawing the small details was an essential part of my role. These technical archaeological drawings form the foundation of my practice, inspiring me to look at the fine details around me.
I predominately work with pen and ink as the clarity and simplicity that this brings helps me focus on the details I love to draw. The permanency of the ink is always a challenge I relish, which again pushes me forwards with this medium. My current work is focused on the landscape and structures of Hull Fair, bringing out the dramatic details and atmosphere of such an amazing and bizarre spectacle. I find the shapes, lights and surroundings of the Fair hypnotic and I want to try and capture this in ink. I work from photographs and the occasional sketch done on location, allowing me to capture a moment in time. Working on sustained drawings like this gives me time to select or exclude details through negative space. I aim to reveal something that goes beyond what is captured by the camera alone, to offer a subtle sense of suspense, wonder and anticipation.
