Josie Purcell Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, United Kingdom
I am an eco-conscious photographic artist based in Cornwall, UK, taking inspiration for my work from my coastal and rural surroundings. I predominantly employ alternative photographic processes and/or digital techniques to create images that spark conversation about our diverse environments and our impact on them. I am always keen to collaborate.
My practice reflects my passion for the natural world. I aim to use photographic processes that have minimal impact, helping me to reduce my own photographic footprint. I am fascinated by how people respond to images depicting environmental issues and if abstract photographic art has the power to invoke action in relation to environmental challenges such as climate change, water resources, and sand mining. Many of the images I create are made with camera-less processes using sand, seawater, soil, and sunlight, with minimal digital techniques employed to mimic or reinvent the reactions, had photographic chemicals been used. In 2021, I began the Photopocene podcast to share the conversations I have with fellow photographers about their eco-conscious photographic practices.
