Lakelandmosaics Cumbria, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

I am a mosaic artist living in Cumbria. I have being making mosaics for a few years and am a former illustrator and mural painter. I make wildlife portraits out of rocks and found materials. I forage slate, quartz, found ceramics, fossils from places I visit and choose subjects that interest or inspire me. My style is representational and I choose materials to give my mosaics texture and movement

I choose my subject, print a reference photo and then trace a guide outline on plastic over a board. I then collect, cut, chip my materials and apply small amounts of tile adhesive to my board. I work on small areas till the main image is completed. I then cut and prepare wedi board (tile backer board) put in integral hanging fixings (d rings) and put a primary coat of tile adhesive on. I peel the completed mosaiced image off the back of the plastic covered board, put more tile adhesive on the back and then place the mosaic into wet tile adhesive on the prepped wedi board. Once dry I will construct a slate frame and then pour self levelling cement. I often self tint it and play around with the cement to get more interesting textures. All the mosaics can hang from wall fittings or be displayed on an easel.
