    Polly Bates is a sculptor, curator and publisher working in London and Manchester, UK. In 2023 she will complete an MFA Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University, after completing a BA in Fine Art from Staffordshire University in 2020. Bates is a multidisciplinary artist currently using ceramic sculpture to explore our biological and geological connection to rocks, land and non-human matter.

    My photography tends to revolve around epic landscapes or people carrying out their day-to-day lives. I have travelled independently to many countries and lived abroad several times.     I am a visual artist based in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. My practice combines naturally beautiful, fragile glass with concrete, wood and metal to create a range of sculptural and wall based work. Much of my work reflects issues surrounding people and place such as memory, history and human connection. My work ranges from public art to private commissions and community projects.

    A photo-based artist, through my own history of emigration, from Northern England to Aotearoa, New Zealand (and back and forth..) my work is concerned with notions of home and belonging and how we identify with our surrounding landscapes. I am currently engaged with various long-term social documentary projects, and the digitisation of my late grandfather - M J Burgess - photographic archive.
