I am a Portuguese/British professional visual artist, living and working in Cambridge, UK. I hold a Degree in Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts/University of Lisbon. I exhibit regularly in Cambridge (Kettles' Yard, New Hall Art Collection) and Portugal. My latest body of work was developed at Newnham College, University of Cambridge collaborating with Researchers on the theme of forced migration.
What do we keep to ourselves and what do we share with others? How do we navigate the constant permanence of change in our lives? My main body of work is contemporary abstract painting and my pieces focus on visually exploring the concepts of identity, memory, our own palimpsest of hidden thoughts and feelings and individual vulnerability in the face of life events. Music, the written word and the water element inform the creative process, both conceptually and visually. Words are the starting point to a reflection on life expectations, personal choices and the relationship between our ideals and what we truly accomplish. The painting process is of special importance to me, since it is through the technique of interconnecting written words with fields of colour that a play between what is intended to be revealed/public and hidden/private is accomplished. I like the idea of ambivalence and restlessness both conceptually and in the process of making. I seek to create, through a physical challenge with the control of the actual rawness of the surface, the materials and the painting technique, works that are a metaphor of our restless inner world aiming to produce final images of atmospheric and contemplative features, that pause and breathe silence.
