I work across kinetic sculpture, robotics, interactive installation, projection and live visual performance. My work combines self-built electronics, mechanical systems, software and physical fabrication with humour, character and audience participation.
I am interested in the point at which an engineered object begins to feel like a character, or when the technology used to display an image becomes part of the artwork itself. Projection surfaces, low-resolution LED displays, robotic bodies, physical controls and mechanical movement are not simply ways of presenting work; they become part of its visual and physical language.
My current practice centres on the Disco Robots, two large-scale kinetic sculptures that operate as performers, characters and platforms for different kinds of work. Recent projects include live robotic performance and Robot Arcade, an interactive installation in which audiences play games using custom physical controls while the robots respond through movement, sound, light and character.
Making and engineering are integral to my artistic process. I tend to begin with an experience, behaviour or slightly absurd idea that I want to exist, then work out whatever combination of mechanics, electronics, software or fabrication is needed to make it possible. Across the work, I am interested in creating moments of curiosity, play, discovery and apparent life.
