Paul Mellor Merseyside, United Kingdom
I studied fine art (Painting) at Wimbledon School of Art 1970-73 and have continued to make and exhibit work since then. I also worked continuously in art organisations as a curator, and Director till my retirement.
Since leaving art college in 1973 I have worked in printmaking, photography and video, exhibiting work in the UK and internationally in galleries, festivals and biennials. I returned to painting full time in 2010 and have a studio in Liverpool City Centre.
Recent work explores memory, history, loss and mortality, that seek to question the idea of both private and collective memories, their illusion and ambiguity. working in acrylic on canvas. As a starting point, I often use source material from my family photo albums, old postcards, and found internet images.
Colours are expressionistic in palette. Working directly onto the canvas with only a very rough sketch as a starting point, the work evolves through the physical act of painting itself, undergoing often multiple changes in colour, perspective, and composition. The finished works are hopefully removed from their point of origin, creating a psychological space, more representative of a state of mind than a specific, real life space.
