Queen Stitch QR South Yorkshire, United Kingdom
I am a subversive stitch artist. I create wearable QR cross stitch badges that you can scan.
I am a subversive cross stitcher and embroiderer. I consider myself an outsider artist.
Subversive cross stitch challenges conservative values expressed in traditional embroidery and contemporary stitchers like myself use it to engage with modern themes. Politics, sex, popular culture, profanity, women's rights, mental health and LGBTQI politics are commonly expressed in subversive cross stitch with an ironic, humourous twist.
I am the first stitch artist to make QR code cross stitch badges that can be scanned to reveal a message on your mobile phone in the form of a PDF. Each badge is hand stitched on plastic canvas and backed with felt. A hand sewn safety pin is attached on the back. Using a QR code scanner (most mobile phones now have one built in as a feature) you can scan the code. The QR code badges are quick and easy to make with completion achieved within the space of 2 -3 hours. I have an online shop where my audience can buy my work and a blog explaining more about my process and what inspires me.
I consider it important not to confine myself creatively to only stitching one thing. I have other cross stitch/ embroidery projects that are in development. I have a piece in it's early stages based around the Rana Plaza garment factory disaster in 2013 (24th April 2023 marks a decade since the disaster and will be a significant date for the completion of the piece). I intend to auction or sell the work with a portion of funds going to a charity helping victims of the disaster. I am also producing embroidered canvases that reflect my own personal passions including song lyrics, movie quotes and portraits of actors and musicians.
