  Back to profiles

Sophia Rosenthal was shortlisted for the Contemporary British Painting Prize 2024, and won The Judith Tucker Memorial Prize selected by Lubaina Himid, Griselda Pollock and Harriet Tarlo. Graduating with a Distinction in MA Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School, Sophia subsequently won the Standpoint Artist Residency Prize 2024 which culminated in a solo show, 'Golden Hour' 2025.

Inspired by lost and rediscovered childhood photographs, my work contemplates the notion of belonging and moments that hang uncertain - within time, memory, and culture. Creating intimate fragments, I use painting as a language and vehicle for exploring the complexity of memory in relation to belonging, identity, and lived experience. Through glazing, layering, and masking - slow, materially driven processes, I bring out feelings of uncanny familiarity and displacement, to conceive of memory not as something static or necessarily in the past, but as impressions that continue to unfold.
