Mick Smith United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Mick Smith is a painter and sculptor working in the North-East of England. His work includes large-scale projects and he will take on commissions of most subjects.

I am primarily an oil painter with 20 years experience of sociological exploration through my art practice. Themes recently have included the Little Faces project which allowed the children from deprived areas of Tyneside to be painted and attend workshops free of charge, the Torn From Home project which involved portraits and stories of refugees who had escaped harsh circumstances and then a collaboration of painting and music looking at the history of the North East with the band Dr Socrates for the Cabinet Of Souls project. Lately I have revisited my sculpture practice as part of my Industrial Heritage project. The pieces, mostly in cast iron, are inspired by old machinery that we have long forgotten how to use. Paintings of old factories and industrial landscapes will inform the 2D side of the project usually rendered in oil or home made charcoal.
