Abstract paintings and collages of the coastal landscape and geological patterns. Ink, carbon lines, maps and book page remants are quietly immersed in atmospheric paint layers. In the hazy colour the hints of detail and line reveal clues of the deeper time in our surroundings. American-British artist with an academic science background in physics, geology and space.
In my abstract landscapes, science and geological patterns are quietly immersed in colour. Juxtaposed with my glazes of soft atmospheric paint layers, I use drawing or collage to draft half-obscured strata of rock and cliff. I lay hints of the deeper time in our surroundings. My take on a traditional landscape brings together art and science, entwines ideas from the sublime artworks of 18th century exploration and the new sublime of modern science. Whether rover landscapes on Mars or the 100 million year-old cliffs surrounding Yorkshire, I want to share a curiosity about time, land, and space within an aesthetically beautiful space.
My studio was established in 2000, first in London and now in Scarborough on the Yorkshire coast. Having created large-scale abstract seascapes for 20 years, my recent work has now transformed into small-scale collages and paintings, both work on paper and canvas. Trained in oils, I work with acrylic paint and inks alongside the paper ephemera used in the collages. Much of the collage material is my own creation, from ink stained Chinese paper to lines drawn directly on the collage mount as a final element.
I was born in 1970 in Chicago and moved to the UK in 1993 for my postgraduate studies in literature and Shakespeare. I became a British citizen in 2012. In 2005 I began cycling and painting the English coastline rather than urban scenes, and seeing sites like Bempton Cliffs and Lulworth Cove prompted a return to university in 2010 to start a geology degree. For that I focused on the coastal geology which is now a vital element of my artwork. Most recently I finished a masters degree in space science and technology, focusing my projects on Mars sedimentary geology, and bringing my total count of degrees to seven. My perpetual academic studies heavily influence my artwork, with the science playing part in creation and the humanities often influencing the titles and stories.
