ramoslübbert is delighted to announce their second international artist residency in Arnis, a small peninsula located in the rustic North-Eastern part of Germany. Taking place from 14th – 28th September 2018, we invite two artists – couples and duos included – to propose a project dealing with Arnis economic, socio-political or geographical conditions.

With Arnis Residency, we aim to expand the notion of rural places as mere retreats, contributing to the production of a creative hub outside the urban context. Therefore, the residency will culminate in a public event spread across different locations in Arnis.

Context

Arnis lies close to the Baltic Sea in a fjord called Schlei and is the smallest town in Germany both by population and by area with only 279 habitants and 0.45 km2. It was founded in 1667 by families moving out of Kappeln, a nearby town, in order to avoid the increasing subjugation of their peonage.

In the 19th century, Arnis turned into a prosperous harbour town, at times accommodating more than 1000 inhabitants and 90 sailing and merchant ships. Known far beyond German borders for its maritime trade, its second most important income was their shipyards, which, next to tourism and yachting, still represent a significant part of its current economy. Whereas Arnis is situated in the region of Anglia, it is believed to be the original home to the Angels, a group of Germanic immigrants whose migration led to their new homeland England being named after them.

Applicants are invited to submit a brief description of a work they would like to finalise and show during the period of their residency. Due to the short stay, we encourage existing projects and lines of research that can somehow be linked to the site, however, we also welcome feasible new engagements. The residency is open to multiple disciplines such as performance, film, painting, sculpture, photography, writing, installation, sound and new media.

Depending on the nature of the works and the weather conditions, we will be able to facilitate as exhibition sites: a local beach, sailing or motor boats, a boat wharf, a floating raft as a stage, the residency’s house back garden and a small car ferry that brings people over to the other side of the fjord amongst others.

Local facilities include a Danish school, a church and a cemetery, an old football field, a beach, a harbour, several boat wharfs, a sea-map maker, a sail maker, a bakery, some artists’ studios, an old mill, a pottery, three restaurants, a textile and a few other shops.

Specifications

Arnis Residency offers food allowance, accommodation in an individual room, space for working (shared desk or/and the space of a sailing boat) and a very small production budget. Travel expenses to Arnis are expected to be covered by the artist.

ramoslübbert offer personal counsel and will facilitate exchange and access to tools as well as liaison with local sources such as metal workshops, boat builders and sail makers. Residents will be taken on short sailing trips and other visits of interest around the area.
