Black Britain is an open call exhibition coming to The Halpern Pop, Rochester. It will be curated by photographer and artist Michi Masumi in collaboration with The Black Art Hub CIC to celebrate Black History Month.

Artists are invited to interpret and express ‘Black Britain’ in abstract, non-linear, or structured formats, using their chosen medium to reflect its histories, identities, and futures. All 2D and 3D disciplines are considered, AI art not accepted.

Black and/or Black British artists from Medway and Kent encouraged to submit.

The Halpern Pop is located on the busy Rochester High Street, inside the award-winning Cafe Nucleus, which attracts local visitors and tourists.

It is a small, yet beautifully formed commercial space,  focused on creating opportunities for artists to sell their work and getting their work seen.

The gallery is sister space to The Halpern Gallery in Chatham, and is part of Medway-based arts and mental health charity Nucleus Arts (The Halpern Charitable Foundation, charity no. 1096478).

Nucleus Arts provides affordable studio and exhibition space for artists and endeavours to promote easy accessibility of the Arts to the public and local community; to break down the barriers and perception of exclusivity of the Arts and to enable the community to interact with the Arts in their local area.

Using art and creativity as a tool to increase people's wellbeing, the aim of Nucleus Arts is to bring people closer together within their communities.

This is a free-to-enter open call, and only successful artists will pay a fee of £20 to participate.

This is a hanging fee which will cover the cost of the gallery hire, technician and admin support. Although not a requirement, artists are encouraged to submit works for sale.

The gallery manage all sales, and take 25% commission, which goes into continuing the work to support local artists and the community at Nucleus Arts.

Please submit up to 2 artworks for the panel to choose from.

A limited number of works will be selected for the show. Artwork will be selected by artist Michi Masumi, who will curate the show with support from the The Halpern Gallery team.

The show will run throughout October, in celebration of Black History Month alongside exhibitions at our other Nucleus Arts venues which are also part of the programmed events. '

The 4 R's: Resistance, Reclamation, Reframing, and Retention through Black Digital & AI Mixed Media practice' will be showing at The Halpern Gallery, Chatham and 'Black, British & Brilliant: UK STEM' in MedwayArtBox, a phone box gallery located on Rochester High Street.

These, and 'Black Britain' will be advertised across all social media platforms (@thehalpernpop - 1.2k followers, @thehalperngallery - 3.4k followers and @nucleusarts - 3.2k followers) and website, as well as listed on the website and social channels of main collaborator The Black Art Hub CIC.

Please submit by 15 September. Successful artists will be expected to deliver the selected work to The Halpern Pop, Rochester, no later than 1st October.
