Our Place: Painting, print, photography, mixed media and written word about Leeds 6.
Deadline: 14/09/2025City: Leeds | Becky Moore
The HEART Centre in Leeds 6 has a new gallery space, the Steve Trattles Gallery, and is looking for art and written word for a new exhibition. It is called "Our Place", reflecting Leeds 6 places, people, community, and history.
Our Place
HEART
HEART Centre, Bennett Road, Headingley, Leeds LS6 3HN
Heart is the flagship project of Headingley Development Trust and represents the five year dream to keep a much loved old primary school buidling in community use.
Opening its doors in January 2011, HEARt occupies the former Headingley Primary School, which was rerfurbised and extended to provide the community facilities which exist today.
HEART was conceived and developed by local residents, who wanted to keep the old school buildings in community use as a hub where local residents could meet and participate in a range of activities, even start up a business.
HEART has a vibrant and busy cafe bar, workspace, a children's play area, meeting rooms, a plant and gift shop, and three gallery spaces.
We organise public events, gigs, film showings as well as hosting, meetings, conferences, weddings, and parties.
We're also home to local businesses providing a home and space for acupunturists, aromatherapists, counsellors, martial arts, choirs, educational classes, writing groups, art clubs, and more.
HEART has a talented staff team, as well as a large team of volunteers who organise gigs and exhibitions, staff the reception desk, and support all aspects of housekeeping.
We all mostly live locally and all very much invested in HEART and our local community.
Our Place
HEART is very much rooted in place. We were founded by local people and run by local people and we love Headingley and Leeds 6.
Our neighbourhood is often seen as an extention of the city's university campuses, but it is so much more than that.
It is a neighbourhood of variety and diversity, of young and old, of culture and identity, of history and of change.
Our Place will be an exhibition celebrating Leeds 6: its places, its people, its history and culture.
We are looking for submissions for visual art and written word that reflects all this and more: paintings, photographs, prints, mixed media (as long as it can be hung on a wall), prose and poetry.
If your work is selected, you will have the opportunity to show and sell your work to the huge number of people who come through our doors each week, whether that be art lovers coming specifically to see the exhibitions, or the people who come to events, meetings, or to socialise.
This exhibition should be very popular, it being about our community. While our usual audience aren't especially wealthy, they do like to support local arts and are particularly keen on art which represents our local area and community.
Publicity
We will be publicising the exhibition through our own newsletter, social media and website, through Leeds Inspired, and with press releases to local media.
We will produce leaflets and posters, which we will distribute to local businesses and community spaces alongside citywide venues.
There will also be a meet-the-artists evening to which we will invite our members, press, friends and family of the artists, local councillors, our MP, local community groups, and arts groups and organisations.
If you are submitting visual art, please select the Art Works form and fill in the details. If you are submitting written word, please select the Poetry and Prose form and submit your work by PDF or Word file.
Work selected in this category will obviously not be for sale, but if you are selected and have pamphlets or books to sell we can arrange this with a small commission to HEART. Submissions should not be more than 300 words long.
Submissions
- There is no charge for submissions or for exhibiting, but HEART will take 20% + VAT commission on any art sold.
- You can submit up to 3 works. We may select more than one of them for the exhibition.
- Please supply at least one good quality photograph of each work submitted.
- All work must be ready for hanging by the time of the exhibition.
Successful applicants
- If your submission is selected, art should be supplied on the day arranged, framed and in a condition ready for hanging. You will also be required to submit wording for labelling of the work before this (title, artist, medium, price).
- You will be required to complete a simple artist agreement form, and include your bank details if your piece is for sale.
- You will be invited to attend the 'meet the artist evening', which will be on Friday 24th October, and we strongly encourage you to do this.
- All sold pieces will remain hanging until the exhibition closes at the end of December (with exception of pamphlets and books, see above).
- Any pieces sold will be distributed to the buyer at the end of the exhibition by HEART. You will be paid by HEART after the end of the exhibition, minus commission.
- All work not sold must be collected by the date given on the artist agreement form.
