Garage Gallery E17 is now its fifth year of hosting imaginative, intimate and engaging exhibitions in our light and flexible space in Walthamstow village, East London. We are looking for curators and curator/artists for group shows (3 artists or more) for our 2027 programme of short shows (4 days), every 6-8 weeks during the year.

We established the Gallery in 2022 to provide an opportunity for artists, both new to showing work and more established, to bring their work to life, in a welcoming and collaborative environment.  Our shows to date have included hung work, sculpture and installations, workshops, audio and video based content and textiles and sculpture.  Each curator and group of artists we have worked with has enjoyed the freedom to shape their own exhibition, and their feedback and that of our visitors has been universally positive.

Every couple of months, we host a new exhibition over a long weekend (Thurs/Fri to Sunday).  From experience we have found that because of the size and location of the Gallery and the ethos of collaboration, group shows of 3 or more artists tend to work best.  We are particularly interested in socially conscious and thought-provoking themes but we are open to ideas.  You can get an idea of the range of our previous shows from our website; please message us if you'd like to discuss your idea before submitting a proposal.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Groups of artists (at least three) with a curator (who may be one of the artists), either new to exhibiting or with previous experience. A connection to East London is desirable but not essential. We are interested in thought-provoking socially conscious work but we also want to host a variety of short exhibitions so we're open to any ideas.
When is the deadline?
Friday 18th December, but we will look at submissions on a rolling basis and we will also be flexible about 'late' submissions.
How much does it cost?
We operate on a not-for-profit basis and we manage the space on a voluntary basis. There is no cost for submitting proposals at this stage. If we do host your exhibition then we ask groups for a contribution of £60 to cover our costs. We also ask groups to be responsible for purchasing refreshments for a Private View, and we ask for 10% of any sales made. We work with groups on publicity and ask them to produce as a minimum a small number of printed posters (they may choose to produce flyers etc too).
Are there payments to artists?
No
Is there a private view / opening?
Yes
What are the exhibition opening hours?
To be agreed on a show-by-show basis with the group
Does the location have disabled access?
Yes
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Groups are expected to work with us on publicity including producing posters at their cost. We promote shows via our website and instagram and do some local publicity with flyers/cards.
Do I need to be present?
Yes we ask curators/artists to invigilate so one person needs to be present when the gallery is open.
How do you decide on proposals?
We will take into consideration the range of shows that we are running, and the different artist groups we are hosting, what would work well in our fairly restricted space, and what we feel would appeal to our regular visitors as well as attracting new people into the space.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
We will ask you to visit the space and talk with you about the practicalities of setting up, running and 'staffing' a short show.
