About Mukutan Conservancy (in their own words)

"For over 50 years, Mukutan Conservancy has been at the forefront of a pioneering conservation model that tackles some of the most urgent global challenges — climate change, biodiversity loss and sustainable development — while proving that communities and nature can thrive together.

Spanning 88,000 acres on the escarpment of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, Mukutan is a lifeline both for the local communities we work alongside and for an abundance of wildlife, including migratory elephants, lions, leopards, over 478 bird species, reptiles, insects and countless rare plants.

Through this art auction we are hoping to raise $20,000 to help us protect Kenya’s iconic wildlife through community-centred conservation. We urgently need support to fund our vital anti-poaching and human-wildlife conflict mitigation work — work that is crucial both for the survival of wildlife and for the well-being of the local communities.

We urgently need support to fund our anti-poaching team for the next 12 months. Our incredible team of rangers patrol the conservancy day and night, monitoring the well-being and safety of our wildlife, while also protecting our neighbours from human-wildlife conflict. Our ranger team are experts in tracking, bush skills, first aid and intelligence-led tactical operations. They are true heroes, braving challenging conditions and putting their lives on the line for conservation. The 15 foot patrol teams cover an average of 80,000 km on foot every year.

We also need:

  • $6,000 to care for our two wonderful anti-poaching dogs, Sage and Raymond — providing food, specialist training, veterinary care and safety equipment for their handlers (as well as looking after our very cute sniffer-pig-in-training, Truffle!)

  • $7,000 to fund our community informer network. We have a network of local people who alert us to potential human-wildlife conflict — whether it’s elephants moving towards a crop field or lions in the vicinity of livestock. This funding will provide 12 months of payments, equipment such as powerful torches and mobile communications.

  • $7,000 to fund a dedicated community officer who works specifically with local communities to reduce crop raids, livestock kills and retaliatory attacks on wildlife.

Together, we can reach our vision of a thriving ecosystem where people and wildlife coexist in harmony."
