Preston Manor in Brighton is growing hops (used to flavour beer) and they need a scarecrow to protect the plants from pests. Using a game called Consequences (originally known as Exquisite Corpse) you and your friends/family/co-workers/enemies are asked to draw and name a character which could be chosen and built by an artist maker to be the Hops Scarecrow! Your scarecrow needs a head, a body and arms, legs, feet and a name. All entries will be published on the project website and social media.

Consequences was a game invented by the Surrealist artists in Paris nearly 100 years ago.

To play:
Two or more players (more is better)
Pens/pencils and paper.

  • Each player draws a head, folds the paper back (keep it hidden) but leaves small guidelines where the next player should continue then pass it on.
  • Continue drawing each stage of the body (four parts in total). Leave a gap at the very bottom for the name.
  • Name the character. Unfold and see what you’ve made!
  • All entries to be published on the project website and social media.

Anyone is welcome take part
, Artists, people that don't call themselves artists...I personally as project runner (and person who has to try and build the Scarecrow) would like to see entries which are done by more than two people, different age ranges and abilities; but the project is open to any combination. See website www.brightonhops.uk for an idea of the project generally and background.

I will select the 'winner' along with staff at Preston Manor, it will be based on how appropriate, apt, imgainative, strange, odd and exciting it is to us along with my ability to build it in terms of materials and time. For a history lesson and inspiration there is nothing quite like reading about the original development of Exquisite Corpse in Paris at this website here: http://www.exquisitecorpse.com/

Good photos or even better scanned images are all you need to send, along with with the name of each artist

Best wishes

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Anyone, the more mixed up, diverse elements the better. Artists, non-artists, groups, families. Anyone at all.
When is the deadline?
9th April 2018.
How many works can I submit?
As much as you like.
When is the delivery date?
E-submissions instant and easy to see are good enough, some original drawings would be good sometime in future if there is formal exhibition; this will be requested from you directly.
When do I need to collect my work?
Your work should easily be posted back to you.
How do you decide on proposals?
All drawings will be published on the website and social media...the one to be built will be decided on by sculptor and project leader Matt and Preston Manor team based mainly on how it could be made with conventional means, like some elements could be built in 3D, some printed flat...it depends on the drawings and time. After 9th April, the Scarecrow needs to be made by June.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
