Fronteer have an open call for work based on food. From contemporary still life to experimental work, if you make work inspired by food we would love to hear from you.

Fronteer Gallery in Sheffield is located on the site of a former bakery. Rather than shun its history we thought we’d embrace it and deliver an open call exhibition all about food.

We are looking for work inspired by food for a 2 week exhibition in August. This could be painting, drawing, sculpture, poetry, print, or whatever 2-D or 3-D medium you use. Perhaps you find inspiration in fast food, branding and packaging, or still life. Whatever your food related work may be, we’d love to hear from you.

It is free to submit work, with only successful artists paying a £20 fee.

Artists based in the UK are invited to submit 1 piece of work measuring no longer than 50cm across any one side (inclusive of frames and mounts). You are also asked to submit up to 50 words describing the work. This text will not be displayed on the wall alongside your work.

The exhibition will run for 2 weeks, from 4th -14th August, with a private view evening on Saturday 7th August, if Government restrictions allow.

The gallery is open Wednesday-Saturday.

The submission deadline is 17th June. Successful artists will be contacted before 22nd June, so please keep an eye on your Curatorspace messages. Successful artists will be contacted and asked to confirm if they would like to take part in the exhibition.

Successful artists can deliver work to the gallery in person during gallery opening hours from 21st – 28th July. If you would like to send your work by post, please note that it can ONLY be sent using Royal Mail. Due to Coronavirus restrictions only Royal Mail delivery personnel have access to the building where the post will be sent to, and we do not yet know when these restrictions will change. Please note that THE POSTAL ADDRESS IS NOT THE SAME AS THE GALLERY ADDRESS, although both buildings are on the same street. All work sent by post must be received by 26th July at the latest.

If you have any issues with these dates please contact us before applying.

Successful artists should pay their £20 fee by 19th July 2021.

Work can be offered for sale during the exhibition, and there is a commission charge of 5% to cover admin costs.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

How to Submit

Artists are invited to submit ONE piece of work.

Work can be 2D or 3D, though unfortunately we cannot accept video or audio works. Works which require hanging must be ready to hang with mirror plates or picture wire already attached.

Please tell us the exact size of your work, including any frames and mounts.

You are welcome to write a short description of the work (up to 50 words). This will not be shown alongside your work.

You can attach up to three images, one should be an image of the whole piece, and further images can be used to show detail in your work.

Work should be collected from the gallery between 18th and 21st August during gallery opening hours. If you have any issues with these dates please contact us before submitting and we can look at possible alternatives. If you would like your work returning to you by post please be aware that we charge a small handling fee on top of the price of postage.

All work must be complete at the time of submission. Any work which varies from the original piece submitted may be rejected. If you wish to submit any form of print, it will be your responsibility to print it off and prepare it for exhibition before delivering it to us.

Thank you and good luck!

Michael and Sharon (The Fronteer Team)
