Here's some more information about our exhibition

Redcar Palace is delighted to present ‘Fried, Frozen and Wrapped’: Our major summer exhibition that celebrates the national obsession with the takeaway and eating out - and we want your work!

We invite you to come along and get involved, and tell us your favourite dishes that are Fried, Frozen and Wrapped!

“As English as Fish and Chips” has become a well-known idiom to describe something that is quintessentially British, so much so that, like the dish, it is deeply rooted in British culture.

And yet, like many other British icons, the true story of fish and chips is far more diverse.

Historian Panikos Panayi shows us Fish and chips is surprisingly more modern of an invention than most realise- barely dating back before the twentieth century.

It is decidedly not English, with fried fish entering the national palate through Jewish communities in East London and chips as we know them originating in Belgium.

Panayi notes that the first mention of the word “chips” used to refer to potato chips is actually found in Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel “A Tale of Two Cities”, used to describe a Parisian street food dish.

Like Fish and Chips, the Chicken Tikka Masala, believed to have been cooked up on Glaswegian soil in Scotland, is actually more likely descended from Indian Butter Chicken and introduced to us Brits by South Asian immigrants.

The food we love to enjoy is deeply rooted in a tale of journeys and shared cultures. It acts as an homage to the diversity of our nation, its people and their histories.

Home to one of the oldest Fish and Chips shops in the country, Redcar is the ideal place to host an exhibition exploring and celebrating our national love for the takeaway and what this says about us.

In Redcar, as across Teesside, we can sample perhaps our most famous dish, the Parmo, which owes both its name and style of cooking to Italian cuisine.
