HAUS-A-REST – FREE OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS & WRITERS Issue 74 – Eco Materials
Deadline: 02/08/2026Jenna Fox
Eco Materials What does it mean to create responsibly? Materials are never neutral.
What does it mean to create responsibly?
Materials are never neutral. They carry histories of extraction, labour, place, memory and transformation.
As artists and writers, the things we choose to work with shape not only the finished work, but the stories we tell about our relationship with the world around us.
For this issue of HAUS-A-REST, we invite submissions exploring Eco Materials—not simply as sustainable alternatives, but as creative collaborators.
Perhaps your practice uses reclaimed, recycled or naturally sourced materials.
Maybe you work with clay, earth pigments, plant fibres, paper, textiles, found objects, waste materials, biodegradable processes, or materials gathered through walking and foraging.
You might investigate repair, reuse, circular economies, environmental ethics, or question what sustainability really means within contemporary art.
We are equally interested in work that explores these ideas conceptually.
How do materials hold memory? What happens when something discarded becomes precious? Can making become an act of care, resistance or ecological responsibility?
We welcome thoughtful, experimental and interdisciplinary responses that challenge conventional approaches to making.
